Delaware Postpones Utility Rate Increase

(October 29)  Delaware ACORN won the delay of a dramatic gas rate increase proposed by Conectiv, Delaware's major utilities provider.

On September 24, Conectiv held a poorly publicized public hearing to discuss a planned 15.9 percent gas rate increase. When ACORN members found out about the hearing later, they attended a regularly scheduled October 21st meeting of the Public Service Commission. Though the Conectiv rate hike was on the agenda for the hearing and would have gone into effect that day, after testimony from 25 ACORN members about the potential impact of the increase and their lack of input at the earlier hearing, the Public Service Commission voted to delay the rate increase and instead organized a new public hearing on Conectiv's proposal to be held on Nov. 3, at 7pm in an ACORN neighborhood.

The Commission also agreed to work with ACORN to investigate other utility issues of concern to our members. Since the hearing, 17 of the members that testified at the Public Service Commission meeting have also gotten their individual situations with Conectiv resolved.
